I love painting my nails. If I could afford it I would get manicures every month, but sadly I’m not swimming in money – plus even if I was I’d probably be too busy eyeing up clothes in Topshop and Zara to even think about my nails. So instead I focused on a key capsule collection that I could add to if/when I wanted to, while also making sure I would actually wear the colours more than once.
Before I use to buy new nail polish every season, even the bright yellow that I wore once and then decided it made me look like I had a disease… needless to say that one when to a better home.
So what are my in my nail polish capsule collection, and why?
Let’s start with my favourite go-to nudes: OPI nail envy in Hawaiian Orchid, Essie polish in Mademoiselle, and Essie polish in Island Hopping. I never realised until I was taking these photos that they basically light, medium and dark on the scale of nudes.
Mademoiselle is the lightest of all these shades and is more like a tint than coloured polish. It offers your nail a clean soft polished look without being overly noticeable that you are wearing anything on your nails. Perfect for someone who prefers not to wear bold colours. The medium shade is OPI’s nail envy Hawaiian Orchid which is my number one for if I want to strengthen my nails while wearing a colour on my nails without having to do the whole shebang of a base coat, colour and top coat.
If you’re someone who wants to know how to grow your nails and keep them strong and healthy check out my post on my top three nail strengtheners here.
The final nude is Essie’s Island Hopping, the darkest of the trio and a gorgeous colour for spring, but neutral enough to suit everyone. Unfortunately I don’t think Essie stock this anymore, however I did find it over on Amazon (here). The closest colour from their available collection is Angora Cardi, which is similar in colour but slightly darker.
From nudes to colours it’s only natural to start with an Essie classic and extremely popular shade: Bahama Mama, a rich deep plum colour. Although it’s a deep colour this polish is great for summer and the transition to fall/winter. FYI it’s an amazing colour for your toes.
For another pop of colour I love Essie Style Cartel, a gorgeous dark-ish blue that still gives you a flare of colour without being too intense. So if you’re not used to wearing bright colours it might be an idea to start off with a deeper version like this one to see if you like it.
My number one favourite is the darkest of my collection OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark. Technically it’s a dark purple – OPI describes it as ‘midnight meets purple’, but it comes out looking almost black. However this doesn’t bother me and I find that I can wear it whatever the season. It might just be me, but I find that darker colours give your nails a touch of sophisication.
Of course no collection is complete without a red and my go-to is Essie’s Berry Naughty. It’s the perfect shade during the festive period, especially if you are not a fan of glittery nails. The shade is deep but also bright, in other words a perfect Christmas berry colour.
